Yup. I recently found out that I’m more likely to die from cancer or heart disease than other people, even though I live a pretty healthy lifestyle. There’s a 67% chance that you’re in the same boat as me.
Don’t worry, I’ll explain.
So here’s what I learned: more than two-thirds of us have risk factors that increase our odds of developing serious health issues and a lot of the time, it’s not because we’re eating badly, skipping workouts, or “failing” at self-care. It’s about things we often can’t control genetics, family history, stress, environment, and even the country or city we live in.
Moving to Germany taught me a lot of things how to navigate grocery stores that close early, how to recycle like a pro, and how to squeeze weekend trips across borders on a budget. But it also taught me about stress. Even positive changes (like living abroad) can crank your stress levels through the roof and chronic stress is a sneaky health risk.
I’ve always considered myself pretty healthy. I don’t smoke, I move a lot thanks to exploring new places, I love fresh food. But my family history? Full of heart disease and cancer. And those factors run deeper than any smoothie can fix.
Here’s the big takeaway I wish more people knew:
If you’re part of that 67%, it’s not your fault. But knowing means you can actually do something about it.
What I’ve started doing:
- Get regular checkups: I book mine the same way I’d book a flight non-negotiable.
- Move daily, but gently: Even a 10-minute walk to a new bakery counts.
- Buffer stress: No phone scrolling right before bed (still working on this one).
- Add good food in: More colorful veggies instead of obsessing over what to cut out.
If you’re reading this thinking, “Great, now I’m stressed about my stress,” please don’t. This isn’t about scaring you it’s a wake-up call to treat your health like that trip you’ve been putting off. Small steps today could make a huge difference later.
And if you need a sign to make that doctor’s appointment or start a morning walk tomorrow, this is it.
